THE COMPANY:
Subway History:
Subway was first started in 1965 by
partners Fred DeLuca and his family friend,
Dr. Peter Buck, a physicist. The restaurant
was originally located in Bridgeport,
Connecticut. The pair began with just
$1,000, and by 1974, they had opened 15
more restaurants in Connecticut. The duo
then started to franchising their business,
and Subway is now holds the title of the
largest submarine sandwich restaurant
business worldwide. Fred DeLuca and Peter
Buck started a company known as Doctor’s
Associates, which manages Subway, and
DeLuca continues to serve as the president
of Subway.
The sandwiches offered at Subway are a
mix of classic favourites and unique
signature subs, such as their Spicy Italian
sandwiches or the Chicken & Bacon Ranch
sandwich. Sandwiches aside, the menu at
Subway also includes salads and breakfast
sandwiches like the Sunrise Subway Melt and
the Double Bacon, Egg & Cheese. The
bread used at Subway is freshly baked each
day, and fresh spinach, jalapeno peppers,
tomatoes, and other toppers are brought in
daily.
Financial Position:
The entire Subway empire is owned and
managed by Doctor’s Associates Inc., a
company founded by Fred Deluca and Dr.
Peter Buck in 1966. Today, Fred DeLuca
still oversees the operations of Doctor’s
Associates and by extension the Subway
business as well. The headquarters of both
Doctor’s Associates and Subway can be found
in Milford, Connecticut. Each year,
Subway’s revenues are close to $15 billion,
flowing from over 35,000 restaurants
located in almost 100 countries
around the world.
Internationally, Subway has an enormous
presence and its stores can be found in
almost 100 different countries. Outside of
the United States, the United Kingdom,
Canada and Australia account for the
largest number of locations, as there are
over 5,000 restaurants in those
countries. Even in smaller countries such
as the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, the
Netherlands and the Czech Republic, you
will be able to find Subway restaurants. In
total, there are over 11,000 Subway
restaurants operating outside of the United
States. More
