THE COMPANY:
The Home
Depot's History:
The Home Depot was established in 1978
by founders Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank.
In 1979, Pat Farrah and Ken Langone, a
merchandiser and investment banker
respectively, were brought on board to
assist in the opening of 2 more Home Depot
locations in Atlanta, Georgia. The first
Home Depot was true to the spirit of modern
Home Depot stores and was a large,
warehouse-like affair that carried a huge
variety of do-it-yourself hardware and
material. In 1981, the Home Depot became
publicly listed on the NASDAQ, and it later
moved to the New York Stock Exchange in
1984. The year 1989 saw the Home Depot
operating over 100 separate locations in
the United States, and in 1994, the Home
Depot went international with its first
store in Canada.
Additional Services Provided By Home
Depot:
The main business of the Home Depot lies
in providing wide selections of appliances,
lumber, tools and hardware, all of which
are meant for do-it-yourself projects and
handyman jobs. Some of the brands that can
be found in their retail stores include
Toro, Ryobi, Cub Cadet, LG, RIGID and
BEHR.
In every Home Depot retail store there
are sales associates who know just about
everything there is to know about the
stores and their products, and whose
responsibility it is to assist customers
with any needs or questions that they might
have. Customers at the Home Depot will even
find a line of products produced under the
eco-branding of the company that offers
products meant to reduce water and energy
wastage as well as maximize reusability and
sustainability.
Financial Position:
Home Depot is a publicly listed company
and its shares are traded under the ticker
HD on the New York Stock Exchange. With
over 2,200 locations around the world, Home
Depot posted 2010 annual revenues of
$67,997,000,000. The company also has over
321,000 employees in various positions in
offices, warehouses and stores worldwide. A
typical Home Depot store covers 105,000
square feet of floor area, while the
largest store, located in Union, New Jersey
boasts a floor area of 225,000 square
feet.
Across the United States, Canada and
Mexico, the Home Depot remains the biggest
company in the business of home improvement
retail. The first Home Depot store in
Canada opened its doors in 1994, Mexico in
2001 and in China in 2006. The Home Depot

The Home Depot Foundation, established
in the year 2002, is a charity dedicated to
working with other charities operating in
communities worldwide. The Home Depot has
long had a tradition of supporting those
local communities in which its stores are
located, and donations are often made to
charitable organizations aimed at assisting
the less fortunate in those communities. In
particular, the company has pledged more
than $30,000,000 to providing support for
returning military personnel and their
families.
