Law Enforcement Resume – What You Need to Know

If you have ever applied for a law enforcement position, you probably know that there is usually a very long, involved application that you will have to complete. Training and Experience

Because of the overall complexity that law enforcement jobs entail, your resume needs to highlight your training and experience. The training that many law enforcement professionals are required to complete can be quite extensive. Including all of it can be too much for your law enforcement resume to stay on one page.

The best piece of advice is to limit your training and experience to that which sets you apart from other applicants. For example, one or two lines may be all that is needed to describe the law enforcement academy that you attended. However, the specialized training that you received for drug interdiction or interview and interrogations techniques should be in a bullet statement. You want to draw attention to these types of training, as commanders are often looking for specific skills.

Achievements and Accomplishments

This is also an important part of a law enforcement resume. List any awards, medals, or accomplishments that might help you stand out, as well. You might not have a certificate indicating that you led your department on felony arrests, but this is something that a potential employer will want to see. Don’t try to “pad” these accomplishments, though. It’s not only lying, it is quite easy for a potential employer to find out the truth.

List any Supervising Experience

You should list any supervisory experience that you may have and it doesn’t just have to be in the law enforcement field. Commanders are always looking for strong leaders to keep their departments in line and these positions also pay more. Highlight this experience and include the number of employees that you were responsible for. You should also list any special training you have had that deals with supervising other employees in your law enforcement resume. If those employees performed above and beyond expectations when you were in charge, then this should be listed, as well.

Professionalism Always

Your law enforcement resume needs to be professional. Avoid using strange fonts or fonts that are too small or too big. Bullet statements should be spaced and indented correctly and your margins should not be too wide or too narrow. A high quality resume paper is a nice touch, but not required. Make sure you proofread the resume carefully for grammar and spelling mistakes.
