Do You Really Need a Resume?
As you probably already know, most police and sheriff’s departments have extensive applications and background packets that must be completed. You may wonder if you need a resume for this type of position. The answer is yes. When you create a great cover letter and resume, you are giving the law enforcement agency a chance to get a quick picture of who you are. Whoever reads your resume will see the education and training that you have, which can often give you a step up on the other applicants.

Bullet statements and numbers should be an important part of your resume. These draw the reader’s attention to the most vital components of your resume. Whenever possible, quantify your accomplishments. By using numbers, the reader will have an immediate understanding of what you have done at your previous employer. In respect to a law enforcement resume, these might include arrest numbers, community service projects, or traffic enforcement.
When it comes to listing your training, you may be tempted to list every certificate you have. While you can do so, if you have dozens of training hours, you may want to include only those that are most impressive. Choose three or four that you believe are best law enforcement training points and use bullet statements to highlight them.
You will need to list your education. If you have a college degree and it hasn’t been more than a few years since you graduated, include your GPA and any awards that you may have earned. Most police officers and sheriff’s departments require a police academy of some sort and you’ll want to include this information, as well.
In order to make your law enforcement resume look as professional as possible, you should use a font like Times New Roman 12. Avoid the odd fonts and don’t use a font size lower than 10, even if you are trying to fit everything on one page. You do want to keep your resume to one page, but the font needs to be big enough to read it easily. If you need to cut some information out, then do so. If you cannot decide what needs to go, have someone else read through it. They may be able to tell you what you can leave off.
A law enforcement resume is important, even if you are filling out a long application, too. You want to stand out from the other applicants and a strong resume can help you do so.
